Every Brilliant Thing
By Duncan Macmillan
You’re seven years old.
Mum’s in hospital.
Dad says “She’s done something stupid’.
She finds it hard to be happy.
You start a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world.
Everything worth living for.
You leave it on her pillow.
You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling.
with Jonny Donahoe

“One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression-and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop.”
- Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
“Every Brilliant Thing,” a really beautiful, kind and lovable little show that, in the 72 hours since I left the theater, has buoyed me, amused me, warmed me and challenged me and, frankly, has helped me beat back my commonplace existential angst…”
- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
“It is sad, but it is also gloriously funny and exceptionally warm. It’s a show that spells out a little of what depression can do to people, but it also highlights the irrepressible resilience of the human spirit…”
- Time Out, London
‘One of those incredible, transformative phenomena of collective imagination.’
- Slant Magazine
“Gradually I came to learn that not speaking about things is how we operated.”
- Alan Alda "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed and Other Things I’ve Learned"
